CRUISE SHIPS VISITING HALIFAX, 2003

It is pertinent, since the 2004 cruise season is now underway, that the focus of this page is a selection of photos of some of the ships visiting the Port last year. 2003 was the best season thus far with 104 calls - compared with 87 in 2002 - by cruise ships representing many of the best known lines. Collectively, they disembarked a total of more than 150,000 passengers, representing a significant economic benefit to Halifax and the local area. These figures are likely to be bettered in 2004 with 120 calls "booked" and 190,000 passengers expected.

REGAL PRINCESS

Name / Owner: REGAL PRINCESS   IMO No: 8521232 (Princess Cruise Line, reg: London).

Date photographed: October 9, 2003. Somewhat of an historic photograph as the British registered "Royal Duet" set sail at the same time amidst a cacophony of hooting sirens. The QE2 was departing Halifax for the last time as she looks forward to a more sedate existence cruising from the U.K. The QM2 will take her place this year with her first visit scheduled September 25.

GRANDEUR of the SEAS

Name / Owner: GRANDEUR of the SEAS   IMO No: 9102978 (Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, reg: Oslo).

Date photographed: September 16, 2003. Last year, RCCL was represented by two ships - the 'GRANDEUR' (1996) and the newly completed 'SERENADE' (see below). Such was their success that the 'VOYAGER' will be a regular caller this year. I have also posted a photo of the late evening departure of her sistership ENCHANTMENT of the SEAS (IMO No: 9111802 74,136 GT; built 1997) with lights ablaze, taken a couple of years previously.

Year built / Builder: 1996, Kvaerner Masa-Yard, Helsinki.

SERENADE of the SEAS

Name / Owner: SERENADE of the SEAS   IMO No: 9228344 (Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, reg: Oslo).

Date photographed: September 3, 2003. 'SERENADE' took the place occupied by the 'BRILLIANCE' in 2002 with regular visits during the spectacular fall season.

NORDIC EMPRESS (since renamed EMPRESS of the SEAS, 48,563 GT; built 1990) also paid a call when she was diverted from her regular Bermuda service by hurricane conditions in September. In turn, Halifax was closed for a period in early October by Hurricane Juan, which caused severe damage as it hit the city and tracked across the Province.

Details: 90,090 GT ; 962 ft X 105.6 ft. Passenger capacity 2,501. Main engines: two General Electric - Marine Fincantieri gas turbines providing the equivalent of 53,000 hp to drive twin azipods, 25 knots.

CRYSTAL SYMPHONY

Name / Owner: CRYSTAL SYMPHONY   IMO No: 9066667 (Crystal Cruises, reg: Nassau).

Date photographed: September 9, 2003. Unlike the previous ships on this page, the CRYSTAL SYMPHONY, and the next two ships depicted, were not regular callers during the season. However, the 'SYMPHONY' or the earlier-build, CRYSTAL HARMONY, pay a call most years. Note the two red stripes on her mast, denoting her NYK Line affiliations (NYK wholly owns Crystal Cruises). She is advertised as one of the most spacious and luxurious cruise ships afloat.

Year built / Builder: 1995.

Details: 51,044 GT ; 781 ft X 99 ft. Passenger capacity 940; 545 crew. Main engines: 6, Sulzer 9ZAL40S diesels (52,838 bhp) coupled to 6 generators, powering two electric motors, screw driven, 22 knots.

GALAXY

Name / Owner: GALAXY  IMO No: 9106297 (Celebrity Cruise Line, reg: Monrovia).

Date photographed: September 24, 2003. To me, Celebrity's ships always look as though they are thoroughbreds. It could be the "go faster" colour scheme and the aggressively, angular styling which makes them look as though they are moving through the water at great speed.

Year built / Builder: 1996, Meyer Werft, Papenburg.

Details: 76,522 GT ; 866 ft X 105.6 ft. Passenger capacity 1,870. Main engines: two, MAN B&W 9L48/60 and two, MAN B&W 6L48/60 diesels with a combined output of 39,750 bhp, screw driven, 21.5 knots.
