CRUISE SHIPS VISITING HALIFAX, 2004

The 2004 cruise season was the best yet with a total of 122 calls with 212,834 passengers spanning the period April to early November. Highlights are shown below. The new season is already underway and will reach its peak in September and October. Ships representing 19 cruise lines are scheduled to visit in 2005 bringing over 190,000 passengers to the region.

QUEEN MARY 2
Inaugural call Halifax - 25 Sept '05


The arrival of the QUEEN MARY 2 - Halifax, October 7th, 2004

Name / Owner: QUEEN MARY 2  IMO No: 9241064 Cunard Line, reg: Southampton.

Comments: September 25 and October 7, 2004. The weather was perfect on both days the QM2 visited Halifax attracting thousands of spectators to the waterfront to enjoy both the warm sunshine and the spectacle of this magnificent ship majestically circling the harbour before docking at the cruise terminal.

Year built / Builder: 2003, At. et Chant. de l'Atlantique, St. Nazaire, at a cost of US$ 832 million.

Details: 148,528 GT; dimensions: 1,132 ft (345 m) x 135ft (41 m); 2,620 passengers - 1,310 cabins - 1,253 crew. Power plant: four Wartsila diesels and two gas turbines for a total of 118 MW (approx. 157,000 hp) providing electricity to power to 4, 21.5MW "Mermaid" pods (2 of which are 360 degree azimuthing, 2 fixed) for a top speed of about 29 knots.

VOYAGER of the SEAS

Name / Owner: VOYAGER of the SEAS  IMO No: 9161716 Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, reg: Nassau.

Date photographed: A regular caller throughout the season. Photographed from the car park of a Superstore while berthed at the cruise terminal.

Year built / Builder: 1999, Masa-Yards Inc., Turku, at a cost of US$ 500 million.

Details: 137,276 GT ; 1.020 ft X 157.5 ft x 29 ft. Passenger capacity 3,114. Main engines: six Wartsila Vasa 46 diesels with a combined output of 102,740 bhp - cruising speed: 22.0 knots.

GRAND PRINCESS

Name / Owner: GRAND PRINCESS  IMO No: 9104005 Princess Cruise Line, reg: Hamilton.

Date photographed: October 19, 2004, departing Halifax. The GOLDEN PRINCESS was a regular visitor in the previous fall season.

Year built / Builder: 1998, Fincantieri Cant. Nav. Italiani S.p.A., Monfalcone, at a cost of US$ 400 million.

Details: 108,806 GT ; 951 ft X 118 ft. Passenger capacity 2,600; 1150 crew. Main engines: six Sulzer 16 cyl diesels with an output of 57,078 bhp for a service speed of 22.5 knots.

MAASDAM

Name / Owner: MAASDAM  IMO No: 8919257 Holland America Line, reg: Rotterdam.

Comments: June 10, 2004. The STATENDAM class MAASDAM took over the weekly run from New York in 2004 from the ROTTERDAM although the latter returned for the fall colours later in the season.

Year built / Builder: 1993, Fincantieri, Marghera, Italy, at a cost of US$ 250 million.

Details: 55,451 GT; 719.6 ft x 101ft; 1,629 passengers; power plant: five Sulzer diesels (46,884 bhp) driving twin screws for a service speed of 20 knots.

CARNIVAL MIRACLE

Name / Owner: CARNIVAL MIRACLE  IMO No: 9237357 Carnival Cruises, reg: Panama.

Comments: June 10, 2004. A new addition to the Carnival fleet at the time, which made its maiden voyage to Fort Lauderdale at the end of March. Like her previous SPIRIT class sister ships before her, she is photographed making her inaugural call at Halifax shortly after positioning in N. America.

Year built / Builder: 2004, Masa-Yards Inc., Helsinki, at a cost of US$ 375 million.

Details: 85,942 GT; 960 ft x 105.6 ft; 2,667 passengers; power plant: six Wartsila 9L46D diesel generator sets (57,452 bhp) driving twin azipods for a service speed of 22 knots.

JEWEL of the SEAS


Name / Owner: JEWEL of the SEAS  IMO No: 9228356 Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, reg: Nassau.

Comments: September 13, 2004. At the time, this ship was the latest addition to the RCCL fleet, being delivered in July, 2004, and is photographed while making her inaugural call in Halifax from the new Liberty Terminal, New Jersey.

Year built / Builder: 2004, Meyer Werft, Papenburg, at a cost of US$ 350 million.

Details: 90,090 GT; 960 ft x 105.6 ft; 2,251 passengers; power plant: two 25 MW gas turbines plus one steam turbine (80,000 bhp total) generating electricity driving twin azipods for a maximum speed of 24 knots.

AURORA

Name / Owner: AURORA  IMO No: 9169524 P&O Cruises, reg: UK - London.

Comments: September 29, 2004. In case you may be thinking that Halifax weather is always perfect for photography .... let me assure you it is not! Fortunately, the rain ceased just before the ships sailed on this particular evening. Opportunities for good angles have been diminished by increased port security measures of late. It's the same everywhere, but we afficionados retain the right to complain. Not that it will do us or our cause any good! Anyway, the AURORA looks good from any angle in any weather.

Year built / Builder: 2000, Meyer-Werft, Papenburg, at a cost of US$ 324 million.

Details: 76,152 gt; 886 ft x 106 ft; 1,874 passengers; 4, 14 cyl MAN diesels, 40,000 kW (54,360 bhp), twin screws, 24 knots.

CONSTELLATION

Name / Owner: CONSTELLATION  IMO No: 9192399 Celebrity Cruises, reg: Bahamas - Nassau .

Comments: Another departure on September 29th - Celebrity Cruise's Millennium-Class, CONSTELLATION, passes the inbound, self-discharging bulker, ALICE OLDENDORFF (Built: 2000, Shanghai; 28,709 GT, 50,259 DWT) on her way out to sea. Another view here.

Year built / Builder: 2002, At. et Chant. de l'Atlantique, St. Nazaire, at a cost of US$ 350 million.

Details: 90,280 GT; 965 ft x 105 ft; 1,950 passengers. Propulsion machinery: Two GE LM2500 gas turbines generating electricity to power twin 19.5 mW, Kamewa "Mermaid" pods; 24 knots. Heat from the exhaust of the gas turbines is used to drive a steam turbine which supplies energy for heating water and the non-propulsion electrical requirements of the ship.

SEABOURN PRIDE

Name / Owner: SEABOURN PRIDE  IMO No: 8707343 Seabourn Cruise Line (a division of Carnival), reg. Nassau.

Comments: September 13, 2004. Photographed departing the Port of Halifax on a busier than usual day for cruise ship traffic.

Year built / Builder: Schichau Seebeckwerft AG, Bremerhaven, 1988

Details: 9,975 GT; 493ft; 212 berths. Propulsion machinery: two 12 cyl motors (5927 bhp ea) plus two 8cyl motors (3970 bhp ea) driving twin screws for a speed of 16 knots.

NANTUCKET CLIPPER

Name / Owner: NANTUCKET CLIPPER  Clipper Cruise Line, reg: Wilmington, DEL.

Comments: September 13, 2004. This 3 deck cruise ship is one of a number of small vessels that visit Halifax annually en route for the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes. She also offers leisurely cruising to the Caribbean and Mexican ports.

Year built / Builder: Jeffboat Inc., Jeffersonville, Indiana, 1984

Details: 95 gt (US measurement); 207ft x 37 ft x 8ft; 100 passengers. Propulsion machinery: two Detroit diesels of approx. 500 hp ea and 1, 200 hp bowthruster; cruising speed - 7 knots.
