This series of pages provides a selection of ships photographed in the Port of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Halifax harbour has amongst the deepest, ice-free water and access for the largest ships at any state of the tide of any port on the eastern seaboard of North America. It is located just 12 nautical miles from the transatlantic great circle route. Having two post-Panamax equipped container terminals, Halterm and Ceres, it is used by several of the major Container Shipping Alliances as well as independent carriers in services worldwide. Halifax is also a popular cruise destination and is anticipating over 100 cruise ship calls in 2004, including inaugural visits by QUEEN MARY 2 and VOYAGER OF THE SEAS. The port also handles oil and petroleum product's traffic, gypsum export, a wide variety of inbound and outbound breakbulk cargo, grain import / export, heavy lift consignments, car import, support for the offshore oil and gas industry and is home to Canada's East Coast fleet.
This page provides a taste of the types of ships that can be seen in port on a daily basis, although these photos mostly date from the mid-1990s. Future pages will feature specific types in some detail.
