Panama Canal Authority tugs photographed during canal transit on the MS VOLENDAM, April 26, 2007. The following is a selection of the older US-built tugs procured before the Canal was transferred to Panamanian control and some of the newer tugs acquired by the Panama Canal Authority since 2000.

COCLE

Name / Owner (Manager) / Flag: COCLE    IMO No: 9247027, Panama Canal Authority. Flag: Barbados (Bridgetown).

Comments: Photographed April 26, Panama Canal. One of three Canadian-built tractor, sister-tugs seen on this day. Another, the COLON (382 gt / 2001-09) is in the background of the photo and the third was the HERRERA (382 gt / built 2002-08). The latter pair are Panamanian flagged.

Other tugs clearly visible in this photo are - behind the COLON - the CHESTER HARDING (303 gt / built 1970 by Southern Shipbuilding Corp., Slidell LA - a sister to the MEHAFFEY, MORROW and SCHLEY, see below) and the HARRY BURGESS - white "B" on black funnel - (356 gt / built 1977 by Thunderbolt Marine Industries, Savannah GA - a sister to the M. L. WALKER, see below).

Comments: Photographed April 26, Panama Canal. Three further tugs of basically the same type seen were the CACIQUE (286 gt / built 1997 by Halter Marine Group, Inc.), the GUIA (286 gt / built 1987 by Houma Fabricators, Inc) and the UNIDAD (286 gt / built 1990 also by Houma Fabricators) .

Comments: Photographed April 26, Panama Canal. According to the Panama Canal Authority web site, the full name of this tug is the JOSEPH C. MEHAFFEY. She was one of four similar tugs built by Southern Shipbuilding Corp. seen and photographed on this day. The others were the CHESTER HARDING (see above), JAY MORROW (MORROW) and the JULIAN SCHLEY (SCHLEY) - see below.
